Niina Suominen is a visual artist who works with experimental moving image. Suominen was educated in the traditional techniques of animation making, and in her artistic work she is interested in reflecting on traditional rules of animation and figuring out ways to break or subvert them. The starting point of Suominen's work is a theme, a topic or some aesthetically interesting detail, but improvisation, movement, and rhythm play an important role. The visual world of her works is constructed upon the qualities of materials, her observations about them, and experimenting with their possibilities. She is interested in abandoned surroundings, found objects, and human reality. The artist’s earlier education in arts and crafts and natural resources influence her work in which handwork and analogical apparata have a pivotal role.
