Ruutsalo Eino

The film makes an attempt to provide a new basis for pictorial expression by means of pre-prepared and post-treated film and by the use of cinematic motion as a framework. The power of the picture frame is reinforced with painting. Various types of film, glossy, black, picture-line, negative and positive, have been scratched, etched, perforated, drawn on or painted, the aim being to create values enhancing the tension of the picture field.

Eino Ruutsalo

Born: 1921

Eino Ruutsalo (1921–2001) studied painting and drawing in Parsons School of Design in New York (1949–50) and Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki (1952–53). He was one of the most prominent pioneers in Finnish visual and kinetic arts. He was a filmmaker, painter, sculptor and a visual poet. He is well-known for his experimental short films such as Kinetic Pictures (1962). He shot his debut film in New York in the early 1950s.
