Hannaleena Hauru’s The Ice Hockey Film by Heidi (2017) and Sami van Ingen’s Flame (2018) were selected for the Videorama Competition of Timishort Film Festival, held in Romania from October 3–7. Videorama focuses on cinematographic creations that stretch the audio-visual language beyond its current limits. The selection will be screened on Thursday, October 4, at 22:00, and on Sunday, October 7, at 16:00.

In The Ice Hockey Film by Heidi, Heidi’s fantasy about hockey player Lauri Mäntyvaara is continuously failing. The film studies the encounters of optical and haptic cinema, and the change in the power structures of the cinematic gaze.

Hannaleena Hauru has graduated from Tampere University of Applied Sciences, School of Art and Media in Finland in 2007 and from the University of Art and Design Helsinki in 2011. She was first acknowledged with her short film “If I Fall”, that was premiered in Festival de Cannes, International Critics’ week and got awarded in Tampere Film Festival, Oberhausen Short Film Festival and in Uppsala Short Film Festival. Previously she has studied theatre and drama research in Tampere University and worked in the field of theatre as a producer.

Flame is a fractured melodrama, based on damaged frames from the last minutes of the only remaining nitrate reel of the lost feature film Silja – Fallen Asleep When Young (1937) directed by Teuvo Tulio. All screening prints and the negative of the film were destroyed in a 1959 studio fire. A sequence from the middle of the film was found at La Cinémathèque Française in Paris in 2015.

Sami van Ingen is a veteran in alternative Finnish film, who has worked as an artist, lecturer and curator since the late 1980s. He lives and works in Helsinki. Van Ingen finished his doctoral studies in the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki in 2012. He often uses random or found materials in his works. His works have been seen in many national and international exhibitions and festivals over the years, including Tbilisi Triennial (2012), Kunsthalle Helsinki (2005) and Sara Hildén Art Museum in Tampere, Finland (2002).
