The last Art for Art’s Sake screening of the year on December 10th, 2024 continues the theme of being touched by examining the impossibility, difficulty and contradictions of touch

The last Art for Art’s Sake screening of the year takes place on Tuesday 10 December 2024 and continues the theme of being touched by examining the impossibility, difficulty and contradictions of touch. In Marjatta Oja‘s work, Dialogue 3101 1990 (1990) the characters are having a dialogue on two levels – sitting face-to-face in armchairs, and through their bodies on the screen visible in the foreground. In Happy New Year Jim (2022) by Andrea Gatopoulos, Jim and Morten are playing video games all night long and chatting online like they do every day. However, this evening is different, as Morten opens the conversation about something that has been bothering him for some time. Leena Kela‘s video essay Rest of Time (2021) examines the interaction between the human body and a boulder; the human body itself loses to the stone’s unwavering power, but by using tools, human overcomes the stone’s permanence. Maryam Tafakory‘s short film Irani Bag (2020) uses excerpts from films made between 1990 and 2018 to examine the hidden meanings of bags appearing in films in post-revolutionary Iranian cinema. Lava (2024) by Jade Kallio and Remi Vesala is a continuation of the working group’s previous work Magma (2020). The wishes for transformation, multi-relationship and boundless love, which were still partially smoldering under the surface in Magma, erupt in Lava, which deals with the end of a relationship.

Video essay deals with time, slowness and change from the perspectives of a human body and rocks. The big, stable rocks represent slowness and permanence, in which a human touch has made quick changes. A human body itself wouldn’t win the unwavering force of a rock, but by using different tools a human can win the permanence of a rock and reform the landscape into a sculpture.

Maryam Tafakory: Irani Bag (2020) 8’

Lava is a love letter to things that cannot be written about: love, exciting piles of twigs, longing, a disappearing landscape, memories you can’t trust. Either writing hurts, or it is impossible to find the words. Lava is a continuation of the working group’s previous work Magma (2020). Both works deal with human relationships and ecology. The wishes for transformation, non-monogamy and boundless love, which were still partially smouldering under the surface, erupt in Lava, a video dealing with the end of a relationship.

The total duration of the screening is approximately 54 minutes.
