Invisible
Ylikoski Maria
President Urho Kekkonen’s long-time and devoted maid, Ester, accompanied him on more than 20 state visits. Yet, she appears only fleetingly in two clips preserved in the YLE archives: once in a compilation filmed during the president’s 1965 trip to India, and in footage capturing the president and his wife arriving at an airport. In the work Invisible, these two events are edited together to show the Invisible Ester.

Maria Ylikoski (b. 1966) has made several video portraits. Her art explores themes related to memory, storytelling and family. Ylikoski has studied photography and moving image. She earned her Master´s degree in Fine Arts from the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki in 2011.
