The Cleaner

Moilanen Milja-Liina

The Cleaner is a depiction of a work in low-wage sector and the structures surrounding the work. What kind of attitudes will a poor woman face in her life? The Cleaner is based on the artist’s own working experiences in the cleaning industry. Taking a form of an autobiographical narrative, the video focuses on the everyday reality of a person working in low-wage sector. The characters, events, and places mentioned in the text are in most cases adapted from the real-life situations and encounters.  The work of a cleaner is strongly related to poverty, being usually the last chance: a job that is taken when nothing else can be found. The salary is low and both the clients and the superiors treat the cleaner as a disposable object. In the cleaning industry, the turnover rate of the workers is high, as the workers face the maximal exploit at the expense of their well-being.
