“New and old Sincerity” – Av-arkki’s two-part jubilee screening!

JOKAKlubi: LongGoodbye (2016)

JOKAklubi: Long Goodbye (2016)

One of the buzzwords in the field of contemporary art and culture during the 2010s has been “New Sincerity”, which is an offshoot of a broader movement called metamodernism. Neither concept has been specifically defined, but they can be described as attempts to move away from the apathy of postmodern irony, back towards meaning and intent. The means of achieving this include sentimentality, even calculated naivety, like being nostalgic while keeping a finger on the pulse. AV-arkki’s two-part jubilee screening is a mixture of old and new sincerity. The first part studies the rules, challenges and possibilities related to encounters and contact between people, from Anneli Nygren’s legendary Laundry-Work (1992) to Hannaleena Hauru’s The Ice Hockey Film by Heidi (2017). The second screening explores emotions connected to cultural environments and products. Pilvi Takala cannot go to Disneyland in a Snow White costume, and Mika Taanila takes us to a robot football match.

The screenings consist of following works:
