Joonas Hyvönen’s Bog Body and Azar Saiyar’s Tell Me selected for New Signs Competition at Lago Film Fest

Joonas Hyvönen’s Bog Body (2019) and Azar Saiyar’s Tell Me (2019) were selected for New Signs Competition at Lago Film Fest, held from July 24 to August 2 in Revine Lago, Italy.

Bog Body will be screened on Monday, July 27, at 21:00 in Riva del Lago. In an animated short film Bog Body, a human cadaver moves layer by layer deeper into a swamp somehow retaining sentience. Descending, she gets evermore entangled in a hive mind of everything the bog has preserved in itself through time. She, however, gets resurrected into a future society, just as the bog bodies of our times have been raised from the swamps.

Joonas Hyvönen (1990) is a multidisciplinary Finnish artist working mainly with digital means and addressing topics surrounding digital technology in relation to other contemporary phenomena, specifically focusing on the interaction between user and the user interface. Hyvönen holds a master’s degree in fine arts from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts.

Tell Me will be screened on Friday, July 31, at 21:30 in Riva del Lago. A narrator asks: “Do you know this bird?”. Tell Me quotes both public and private archival images in which birds are in the centre – birds as individual living beings but also as creatures habiting the world and stories created by humans.

Azar Saiyar: Tell Me (2019)

Azar Saiyar is a Helsinki-based filmmaker and visual artist. She often uses archive materials and plays with images and words of collective memory to look towards ways of looking, remembering and storytelling.
