Hanna Kaihlanen’s Hovering Over Us nominated for the Golden Key, Paula Lehtonen’s Guests of Honor included in Short & Sweet section at 41st Kassel Documentary Film and Video Festival

Hanna Kaihlanen’s Hovering Over Us (featured image) has been nominated for the Golden Key for the best documentary short film by the selection committees of the 41st Kassel Documentary Film and Video Festival, held from 12–17 November, 2024 in Kassel, Germany. The Golden Key will award an outstanding documentary work of a young director.

Hovering Over Us (2023) looks at how very small beings are often behind major events on the planet. The film observes mosquitoes, the tiny creatures that float around us. The hybrid film dives into a reality where the smallest creatures have become unpredictably significant. Past, present and the imaginative overlap and create strange visions, where uncanny details start to resemble prophecies and a human becomes a tiny piece of the big buzzing puzzle.

Paula Lehtonen: Guests of Honor (2024)

Paula Lehtonen’s film Guests of Honor will be screened in the Short & Sweet section.

In Guests of Honor (2024), a dinner is laid on the table. Arriving guests are creatures that are typically found on the plate. The work aims to present this farm animal as an equal to humans, even though the situation, and the perspective, is human-centred.
