Jan Ijäs’s Waste no. 2 Wreck (2016) and Jani Ruscica’s Conversation in Pieces (2016) will be screened at the International Festival for Ethnographic Film in Québec, Canada. The 11th edition of the festival is held from 29.3.–13.4.
Both films will be screened on Saturday, March 31, in the Musée de la civilisation. Jan Ijäs’s Waste no. 2 Wreck is included in the screening “Témoignages en mouvement”, at 16:00 and Ruscica’s Conversation in Pieces is included in the screening “Éveil nocturne”, at 20:00.
Jan Ijäs’s Waste no. 2 Wreck was filmed in 2014 and 2015 in the graveyard for refugee boats on the Italian island of Lampedusa. It is a story about how the value of garbage and rubbish can surprisingly change.
Media artist and filmmaker Jan Ijäs lives and works in Helsinki, Finland. Ijäs works with documentary, fiction and alternative film. The films of Ijäs deal with serious and difficult social themes, like migration into foreign and hostile societies. Ijäs’s films have been shown very widely abroad by over a hundred film festivals and as installations in museums and galleries.
Like a sprawling, inconclusive conversation, Jani Ruscica’s Conversation in Pieces enlists six objects to reflect upon issues related to representation.
Jani Ruscica is an artist working with video, photography, sculpture and other media. Ruscica is based in Helsinki and was educated at Chelsea College of Art and Design in London and at the Academy of Fine Art in Helsinki. Ruscica’s self reflexive works explore the intersection between cinema, video art, theatre and performance. Ruscica has worked with scientists, theatre makers and street performers. Recent exhibitions include Casino Luxembourg, 5th Momentum Biennial in Moss, Norway (2009) and Bonniers Konsthall in Stockholm (2009), Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma in Helsinki (2009), as well as screenings in institutions such as Centre Pompidou in Paris, TATE Modern in London and MoMA in New York.
