The 32nd International Film Festival Etiuda&Anima presents a retrospective of Finnish animation, curated by Joni Männistö, Artistic Director of the Turku Animated Film Festival. The programme includes Eino Ruutsalo‘s Kinetic Pictures (featured image), Pasi ‘Sleeping’ Myllymäki‘s 3000 Cars and Niina Suominen‘s Good Stuff. The International Film Festival Etiuda&Anima takes place from October 14–19, 2025 in Kraków, Poland.

The film Kinetic Pictures (1962) makes an attempt to provide a new basis for pictorial expression by means of pre-prepared and post-treated film and by the use of cinematic motion as a framework. The power of the picture frame is reinforced with painting. Various types of film, glossy, black, picture-line, negative and positive, have been scratched, etched, perforated, drawn on or painted, the aim being to create values enhancing the tension of the picture field.

3000 Autoa

3000 Cars is one of Pasi ‘Sleeping’ Myllymäki’s most minimalistic classics. A stop-motion animation consisting of the front grilles of different cars, shot in the parking lots of local supermarkets. The 13-second sequence keeps looping while the ticking sound of the acoustic guitar is sped up to frantic levels.

Hyvä meininki

Niina Suominen: Good Stuff (2009)

In this game one person’s loss isn’t another’s gain – everyone loses. In the world of losers different laws prevail and there is always plenty of good stuff around. All the food used for the animation was collected from bins.
