La Cineteca Nacional in Mexico celebrates Finnish cinema with a special programme of eight feature-length films and nine short films. The event is held from April 12–19. The selection includes films by Mika Taanila and Marja Helander.
Mika Taanila‘s Tectonic Plate (2016) is screened on Saturday, April 14, at 18:00, and on Sunday, April 15, at 20:30. Tectonic Plate is a camera-less lettrist film about fear of flying, security checks and time zones. After returning from a trip to Tokyo, the protagonist is stuck at a hotel nearby the Helsinki airport. The use of various technical devices, slivers the time-management and modifies the jet-lagged consciousness.
The short film screening takes place on Tuesday, April 17, at 18:30, and on Wednesday, April 18, at 20:30, following the screening of Katja Gauriloff’s documentary film Kaisa’s Enchanted Forest (2016). The selection includes short films by Taanila and Marja Helander.
Mika Taanila’s The World (2017) revisits The Man Who Fell to Earth (dir. Nicolas Roeg 1976) evacuated and flipped. In abandoned landscapes, animals, furniture and empty vehicles are left awaiting for disaster. ”We must have died alone, a long long time ago.” (D.B.)
Marja Helander’s Dolastallat – To have a campfire (2016) is an experimental short film, which tells about a Sámi woman going to the mountains in Kola Peninsula, and having a modern campfire with an unexpected creature. The vast landscape has hints of Arctic mining industry, and there is also a reference to the old Sámi myth. The work is also a portrait of its auteur.
