Elena Näsänen’s Whoosh & Timo Wright’s Embrace at the 26th FILM FESTIVAL OF MADRID

Elena Näsänen’s Whoosh (2016) and Timo Wright’s Embrace (2016) will be screened at the 26th Madrid Film Festival (FCM-PNR). Held from October 12–24, the festival is organised by the non-profit organisation PNR (New Filmmakers Platform), operating since 1987 in promoting emerging filmmakers.

The screenings of Elena Näsänen’s Whoosh take place on Friday, October 13 at 18:00 in Cineteca, Sala Plató, and on Saturday, October 14 at 16:00 in Artistic Metropol.

In Whoosh, an old Art Nouveau villa attracts a 17-year-old girl. She escapes from school’s drawing class to explore the villa more closely. Sometimes you need to step into the unknown to confront yourself.

Elena Näsänen (b.1968) is a visual artist who works with film and video installations. She has studied in Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki and The Slade School of Fine Art in London. In her works she combines elements of traditional cinema to video installation. The sound is always essential in her works. Her works has been shown in several exhibitions and film and video festivals. For example in Helsinki Kunsthalle, Marco Museum Vigo, The Anna Akhmatova Museum, St. Petersburg, Kyoto Art Center, Mediamatic Amsterdam, FACT Liverpool, Anthology Film Archives New York, La casa Ensendida Madrid, Tate Modern London, ZKM Karlsruhe, Rotterdam Film Festival.

The screening of Timo Wright’s Embrace takes place on Saturday, October 21 at 18:00 in Cineteca, Sala Azcona.

Embrace shows us an abandoned house, furniture strewn around, discarded. Slowly, a red smoke starts to pour in through the doors. Eventually the whole house is engulfed with the smoke that hides everything from our sight.

Timo Wright is a photographer and media artist based in Helsinki, Finland. Wright has graduated with MA degree from the Aalto University School of Art and Design in Helsinki in 2012. He has participated in domestic and international exhibitions since the early 2000s including Gallery Forum Box in Helsinki (2014), Helsinki Art Museum’s Kluuvi Gallery (2013), Photographic Gallery Hippolyte (2008) as well as festivals such as Japan Media Arts Festival in Tokyo and Stuttgarter Filmwinter in Germany (2014).
