
August Joensalo‘s The Rootless has been selected to be showcased at the 44th Jean Rouch International Film Festival, taking place from May 8-15, 2025 in Paris, France. The Rootless will be screened in the section Prises de parole.
Jean Rouch International Film Festival is one of Europe’s leading events for documentary films related to social sciences and humanities. Founded in 1982 by the filmmaker and anthropologist Jean Rouch (1917-2004), it is held every May in Paris. Over a period of 3 weeks, it screens more than 70 documentary films, showcased in the 3 sections of the official selection or in thematic programs. All screenings and events are free of charge.
In Rootless (2024) a desire to revive the Karelian heritage, culture and language between a grandfather and grandchild is interrupted by the grandfather’s sudden passing.
August Joensalo (b. 1993) is a Finland-based film director and writer interested in things such as memories, time, identity, embodiment and play. They use film and images for both creating relatable utopias for queers, as well as breaking the binaries of languages, bodies and identities. Their practice is focused on celebrating trans resilience, joy and existence.
