Niina Suominen’s Mindfullmess (featured image) and Heidi Piiroinen‘s I am a River have been selected for ANALOGICA 16, held from November 11–15, 2026 in Bolzano, Italy.

ANALOGICA is a platform and festival based in Bolzano, dedicated to the investigation and dissemination of analogue practices in visual and sonic experimentation. The festival revolves around screenings and live performances, encompassing expanded cinema and sonic experimentation that explore the relationships between photochemical image, space and analogue sound.

A celebration of neurodiversity. Scattered stimuli dissolve thought into noise—yet within the chaos, a new order emerges as perception shifts into a bodily experience of rhythm and movement, image and sound. What first appears senseless leaves behind traces that may, after all, hold meaning.

Niina Suominen is a visual artist working with experimental moving images using animation and analogue
hand-made processes. For over 20 years she has produced short audiovisual films inspired by early experimental animation, exploring late-modern surrealism through self-built tools and repurposed materials.

Inspired by Pablo Neruda’s Book of Questions—a collection of lyrical, unanswerable poems that playfully interrogate nature, life, and the cosmos—the film weaves poetic inquiry with visual abstraction through the rarely used mordançage technique. Its veil-like formations evoke the fluid, fragile, ever-changing essence of rivers, suggesting they are living entities, much like us.

Heidi Piiroinen is a Helsinki-based visual artist and photographer working across experimental moving image, photography and installation. With a background in documentary storytelling and photojournalism, her practice has shifted toward more intimate, process-based works that explore emotional memory, invisibility, and suppressed states of being.
Piiroinen combines analogue techniques like 16mm film and mordançage with text, archival material, sound, and community collaboration. Her recent solo exhibition In Case of Loss / sitten haluaisin laulaa—which weaves together diary entries, collaborative writing, soundscapes, moving images, and performance into a cinematic, multi-room installation—premiered at the Rauma Art Museum (2024–2025) and travels internationally to Lisbon in late 2026.
