Samuli Alapuranen’s Drag Me to Kempele (2017) and Milja Viita’s Q (2016) have been selected to the Nordic Competition of Minimalen Short Film Festival, held from January 25–29 in Trondheim, Norway.

Alapuranen’s Drag Me to Kempele will have its international premiere in the programme 1 on Wednesday, January 25 at 12:00. Drag Me to Kempele is a portrait of a mediocre town where people shop, exercise or drive through on their way to North or South. Kempele is a grey hole located in the northern part of Finnish Ostrobothnia. It neither pulls in or pushes away the flow of traffic that trickles through it via the E4 motorway.

Samuli Alapuranen (b. 1974) is a media artist born in Kempele, Northern Finland, and based in Helsinki. Alapuranen graduated from Tampere School of Art and Communication in 1998 and works as a film maker, graphic designer, musician and VJ.

Premiered at Kasseler DOKFest, Milja Viita’s Q will be screened in the Nordic Competition programme 5 on Friday, January 27 at 11:00. Q is a conceptual film about forces that change the world. Q takes us to the end of the worlds, the depths of the ocean and to the ruins of Atlantis. Q’s destruction is the road to new growth — it is the only promise of continuity and the emergence of new nations. Q is shot on 16 mm film whose surface has been hand-coloured.

Milja Viita’s (b.1974) installations and films consist of experimental and documentary elements. Her works have been exhibited in e.g. Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Kunsthalle Helsinki, Mänttä Art Festival and in film and media art festivals internationally. Milja Viita lives and works in Porvoo, Finland. She graduated with MFA degree in Time and Space Arts from the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki in 2005.
