In girum imus nocte et consumimur igni

Jarkko Räsänen

‘Compression’ is a misleading word in case of jpeg files, the most common digital image format, because it actually destroys as much information from the image as possible without human eye noticing it. With the help of the software created by the artist, the video shows jpeg compression decay of ten jpegs about famous book burnings. The soundtrack consists of “silence” from a vinyl record: the cracks and pops that resemble the sounds of burning are dust and dirt on the surface of the vinyl record that does not include any sound information.
