August Joensalo’s, Pasi Autio’s and Johanna Lecklin’s films and videos at Instants Vidéo, Marseille, France

August Joensalo’s Space Is Quite a Lot of Things (2021, in featured image), Pasi Autio’s Feel the Heat (2022), and Johanna Lecklin’s Her Subjects (2022) were selected for the programme of Instants Vidéo Festival, held in Marseille, France, and several other locations from October 12 2023 onwards.

Space Is Quite a Lot of Things will be screened in October 20 2023 in Friche la belle de mai and in October 24 2023 in the South Region Mairie, Marseille. In Joensalo’s film curiosity about a world without gender sets a journey through a world of jellyfish and disco uncles, creating space for four trans people to share how they relate (or not) to their own gender, imagine visions of their own queer utopia, and reveal whether gender can be felt in your toes.

Her Subjects will be screened in October 22 2023 in Friche la belle de mai. Johanna Lecklin’s stop motion animation Her Subjects draws attention to the power of the royals on their subjects, such as the colonies. It consists of three parts. The piece discusses questions of power in a time, when the thought of some peoples’ inherent privilege seems outdated. It considers traditions of the monarchy, which seem absurd in Europe after Brexit. Her Subjects is based on animated found footage and it can be shown as a single channel work of on three monitors next to each other.

Pasi Autio’s Feel the Heat is included in the festival’s exhibition, opening in Friche la belle de mai in November 20 2023. Feel the Heat depicts a one-man disco in a forest at night, and the atmosphere is magnificent – the lights are flashing, birds are singing, dancing continues and time disappears. The night cannot go on forever and, in the morning, the surrounding reality is revealed.
