Jussi Eerola’s Blue Honda Civic and Joel Autio’s The Other Night compete at Beijing ISFF

Jussi Eerola’s Blue Honda Civic (2020) and Joel Autio’s The Other Night (2019) were selected for the international competition of the Beijing International Short Film Festival. BISFF is held from December 4 – 14.

Eerola’s film was also recently shown at Cork International Film Festival in Ireland, as part of the Semi Shorts: Signals & Circuits -programme. Cork IFF was held from November 8 – 15. Autio’s short film has been previously screened at Florida Film Festival and Chicago Underground Film Festival.

Jussi Eerola’s Blue Honda Civic (in featured image) is a minimalistic road movie mirroring the emotions of the driver through the landscapes (s)he has chosen to look at. The romantic landscape paintings often portrayed weather condition, topography of national landscape, religious themes, spirituality of nature and hunting scenes.

Finnish filmmaker and cinematographer Jussi Eerola (b. 1969) has worked as director of photography on many international award-winning films from prominent Finnish directors and artists. His directorial debut was in 2009 with Refugees of Technocracy, a documentary about electro-hypersensitive people. Return of the Atom (2015) received the Best Nordic Film prize at CPH:DOX and it was co-directed with Mika Taanila, one of the people with whom Eerola founded Elokuvayhtiö Testifilmi, a Finnish film production company. Blue Honda Civic is his directorial short film debut.

Joel Autio: The Other Night (2019)

In Joel Autio’s The Other Night, dreams and memories merge together at the moment of disappearance. Recurring visions and gestures are drawn into the void within the portrait of a fading self.

Joel Autio (b. 1987) is an artist and a filmmaker based in Helsinki, Finland. He works with short films, video installations and animations. Autio’s films have been shown in international film festivals and events around the world, including Nordisk Panorama (2014), Art Athina (2015), and Florida Film Festival (2020). He has won TENT Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 2014, and was a nominee in the international ”Contemporary Talents” art competition by François Schneider Foundation in 2020. He holds a master’s degree in visual arts from Aalto University.
