Material Conditions of Inner Spaces by Erkka Nissinen (b. 1975) and Not to Scale at All by Kaisu Koski (b. 1975) have been selected for the WNDX Festival for Moving Image, to be held in Winnipeg, Canada, from September 23 to 27, 2015.
WNDX marks the North American Premiere for Material Conditions of Inner Spaces and International Premiere for Not to Scale at All.
In Nissinen’s film, three men are trying to change the material conditions by social action. The lead characters of this absurdist slapstick musical are on a quest to find their inner spaces.
In little more than a decade, filmmaker and artist Erkka Nissinen has produced a body of work that has no equal: absurd, grotesque, bizarre, satirical. Nissinen has studied in The Slade School of Fine Art in London and the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki, Finland. During 2011 Rotterdam Art Fair Nissinen won the acclaimed Illy Prize. In 2013, he was awarded with the AVEK Prize for media art. Recently, the works of Nissinen have been presented at international festivals and events such as Kumu Art Film Festival, Tallinn, Estonia; VIDEOEX, Zurich, Switzerland;EMAF – European Media Art Festival, Osnabrück, Germany; International Short Film Festival Oberhausen, Germany and Go Short – International Short Film Festival Nijmegen, the Netherlands.

Kaisu Koski’s animated film investigates the historically charged meanings and cultural values of the female reproductive system. Not to Scale at All explores the status of medical students’ drawings in the process of becoming a doctor. It employs drawings created by 63 first-year medical students in the Plymouth University Peninsula School of Medicine. The animation also rethinks the relationship between data analysis and dissemination in arts-based research projects, by introducing a dialogic way to examine the drawing data.
Kaisu Koski is a Finnish artist and researcher based in the Netherlands. She graduated from the Faculty of Art and Design in the University of Lapland and the Amsterdam School of the Arts, receiving training in media and performance art. In 2007 Koski earned her doctoral degree in the University of Lapland. Her art practice is intertwined with academic research, focusing on the dialogue between art and medicine, and the methodology of arts-based research. Her works have been exhibited widely in Finland and abroad since the early 2000s.
