The Unknown is an experimental short film depicting Finland during the times of the Continuation War against the Soviet Union. It is a war film without heroism, picaresque characters or moral high ground. When a war film is reduced of these traditional, and often propagandistic characteristics, what remains is pure fear, sorrow and confusion. The film is a compilation of material from 21 different feature length films. The title refers to Finnish author Väinö Linna’s iconic novel The Unknown Soldier and to the three film adaptations of the same name.
