Is Anneli Nygren as the ”Mona Lisa” of Finnish contemporary art? When viewed at a distance, Leonardo’s creation smiles softly, when up close and personal, she frowns. Nobody knows Anneli Nygren’s real age. We only know that an early issue of her self published magazine “Tytin Lehti” (Girlie’s Magazine) is dated 1971.
Anneli Nygren is the uncrowned queen of self-learned media artists. She is a folk video artist. Nygren’s art is a Gesamtkunstwerk. She works with many mediums – ranging from composing and performing casio synth music on audio cassettes to publishing self-made magazines. Her video art mutates all mainstream genres of moving image: documentaries, fiction films, music videos and animations. Nygren loves everything Popular while flirting with critical theory. Her works pokes fun at classical performance and recycles characters from Dallas and other popular TV-series.
Nygren’s art is devoid of professional pretention, decidedly low-tech, and not originally intended for public consumption as “art”. Rather, it seems to have emerged out of instinctive necessity – and simple fun.
