EMAF 2014: WE,THE ENEMY

Life under suspicion – 30 years after “1984”, all of us are under constant observation: achieved via CCTV, by centrally monitoring all electronic devices and by tapping into our entire communication. Orwell’s creation of a naive surveillance dictatorship in his dystopia from 1949 has crept into our everyday lives in a considerably smarter, subtler way. Disciplinary society is changing into a society of (self-)control that seeks to achieve the optimised management of human beings, the body and knowledge and meanwhile does not only violate fundamental rights that formerly seemed to be assured.

The exhibition, performances, accompanying film programmes and talks will reflect upon how we became “enemies”, observed from all sides, and how the contemporary international art scene responds to this phenomenon.
