Suomi-Väänänen and SUPER NORTH WORKSHOP @ Experiments in Cinema, Albuquerque
A complete retrospective of Maarit Suomi-Väänänen‘s works is shown at Experiments in Cinema, held April 5—10 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The festival marks the U.S. premiere for Log Head (2015) and the world premiere for Minispectacles 19—24: Albuquerque Straight (2016), shot during Suomi-Väänänen’s visit to Experiments in Cinema last year.
Besides a special presentation “Super North”, Suomi-Väänänen facilitates the SUPER NORTH WORKSHOP, including a total of 24 Minispectacles and a showcase of Finnish experimental film by AV-arkki’s female member artists such as Pilvi Takala, Salla Tykkä and Anneli Nygren and many others. Suomi-Väänänen will speak about her artistic approach in visual and media arts in the context of women and filmmaking in Finland.
This year’s programme of Experiments in Cinema honors women in experimental film with the “She-ness Edition.” Directed by Professor Bryan Konefsky, the event pays special tribute to Laura Mulvey and Chantal Akerman. Suomi-Väänänen’s essay “Log Head has a Hog Deal” is published in the festival’s Yearbook #2 Girlfriend: An Ovular Peek into She-ness and Cinema.
In addition, Minna Långström‘s To Melt (2015), an audiovisual poem about intergenerational transmissions of memories, will have its U.S. premiere April 7 in EXPERIMENT 12 programme.
