Saara Ekström's Phantasma and Jan Ijäs's Waste no. 2 Wreck compete at Jihlava IDFF
Saara Ekström’s Phantasma and Jan Ijäs’s Waste no. 2 Wreck are selected in the international competitions of the 20th Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival. The largest festival of creative documentary in Central and Eastern Europe takes place from October 25–30.
The screening version of Ekström’s Phantasma (2016) will have its world premiere in Fascinations competition section. The section is a showcase of experimental filmmaking expanding the possibilities of filmic expression.
In Phantasma, the camera transports the viewer through dreamlike delirious and dilapidated rooms of an aquarium opened in Copenhagen in 1939. The organic merges with the mechanical as time drives the opposite elements towards a joint destruction. Saara Ekström lives and works in Turku, Finland. She studied at Turku Drawing School (Turku Arts Academy) in Finland during 1983–86 and at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, the United States during 1995–97. She was a candidate for the Ars Fennica Award in 2002 and the artist of the year of Helsinki Festival in 2005. Her works are represented in many collections in Finland and internationally.
Jan Ijäs’s Waste no. 2 Wreck (2016) will be screened in Short Joy, a competition selection of the best documentary shorts exploring the possibilities and strenghts of documentary film within a limited time framework.
Waste no. 2 Wreck was filmed in 2014 and 2015 in the graveyard for refugee boats on the Italian island of Lampedusa. It is a story about how the value of garbage and rubbish can surprisingly change. Media artist and filmmaker Jan Ijäs lives and works in Helsinki, Finland. Ijäs works with documentary, fiction and alternative film. The films of Ijäs deal with serious and difficult social themes, like migration into foreign and hostile societies. Ijäs’s films have been shown very widely abroad by over a hundred film festivals and as installations in museums and galleries.
