Power by Salla Tykkä at the 3rd Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art, Sept 9 – Nov 10, 2015

Salla Tykkä (b. 1973) participates in the Main Project of the 3rd Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art with her work Power (1999). The 3rd Ural Industrial Biennial takes place in Yekaterinburg, Russia, between September 9 – November 10, 2015.

In Tykkä’s film, a young woman without a shirt and a big man are boxing. The black and white image and the timeless space make the atmosphere dream like, although the hard action and sounds refer to real life and pain. Power is a statement against the power relations in our society but it can also be seen as a symbolic battle for life and surveying through it.

Salla Tykkä is a Helsinki-based artist. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki 2003. She has been working with photography, video and film since 1996. Her work often deals with audiovisual memory and the power structures within the everyday life visual narratives. Her works have in recent years been seen in solo and group exhibitions in London, Norrköping, Amsterdam, New York and Paris, and she has participated in Biennale of Sydney (2010) and Venice Biennale (2001). Tykkä’s films have also been shown at international film festivals such as the International Film Festival Rotterdam (2007), Tribeca Film Festival in New York (2003) and International Short Film Festival Oberhausen (2003, 2002). Her most recent short film Giant was awarded with the Tiger Award for Best Short Film at the 43rd International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2014.

Curated by Li Zhenhua (Beijing/Basel) and Biljana Ciric (Shanghai), the key term of the 3rd Ural Industrial Biennial is mobilization as an ability to change and to rise to a fundamentally different level. The main research direction of the Biennial is to define specifics of contemporary mobilizational scenarios, possibility of reconsidering conceptual apparatus and what is the role of culture, critical thinking and contemporary art in a situation of mobility. The program is accompanied by a research of application of experience of the avant-garde architecture in the present.
