The films ONE (2015) by Juha van Ingen (b. 1963) and My Tree (2015) by Salla Myllylä (b. 1961) have been selected for the Nordic Competition of the 28th Minimalen Short Film Festival, taking place in Trondheim, Norway, between January 29 and 31.
Both films will have their Scandinavian Premiere at Minimalen. The films were selected through AV-arkki’s distribution, out of more than 400 submitted shorts. The complete list is available at www.minimalen.com.
The starting point for Juha van Ingen’s ONE is a video recorded with a mobile phone. The camera hasn’t been able to capture the original view and the resulting video contains only mystical glitch. What causes the glitch? What is the moment or subject, which was originally attempted to be documented? Is there a huge planet or a tiny cell in the video? The soundscape of ONE is homage to big questions, a mash-up of 60’s sci-fi cinema soundtracks.
Juha van Ingen is a Helsinki-based artist, who utilizes various mediums in his works ranging from objects and spaces to moving image and sound. He often deals with processual dismantlement and re-construction. The random elements which evolve during the working processes play an equally important role in van Ingen’s works.
In My Tree hand paints an outline for a tree on a window on a sunny spring day. People and cars pass by in the suburban backyard. The painting advances little by little. Passing of seasons is filmed through the aperture created by painting. The work describes a gesture of mark making and note taking in an everyday environment.
Salla Myllylä lives and works in Helsinki. Her work moves between drawing, painting and moving images, and is always site specific.
