Mox Mäkelä's Strange will have its UK Premiere at TATE Modern, London

Mox Mäkelä’s feature-length audio play film Strange (2018) will have its UK premiere at TATE Modern, London, on Wednesday, May 15, at 18:30 with discussion with Mox Mäkelä and Tate Film curators.

Midway between a film and an audio play, Strange blends the voices of off-screen characters with fantastical black-and-white visuals. The rich digital imagery is carefully edited to prompt associations between the sounds and images that unfold. Part drama, part satire, the work tells the story of The Stranger, an androgynous foreigner who travels the Finnish landscape and encounters a series of absurd yet tragic events. His estrangement slowly opens up ways of thinking about our position in the world, our relationships with others and the current ecological situation.

Mox Mäkelä (b. 1958) is a conceptual artist active since 1978. Mäkelä’s art has been shown widely in different venues and contexts, e.g. in the Maritime museum of Finland and at international film and art festivals. In her ecocritical films and installations, Mäkelä examines the clash between nature and human nature within the marine milieu. Another part of her oeuvre is “idiot ibidem”, a long-term extended project that studies a literary historical chain of events with full methodological freedom and diversity.
