Woman with digital camera
Finnish filmmaker and video artist Maarit Suomi-Väänänen has, in addition to making a short film trilogy, set herself the task of crafting 100 Minispectacles. She has thus far, by 2014, created 18 film haikus. Her Minispectacles depict scenes from everyday contemporary life all imbued with liberating absurdity and humour. Many of them express closeness to nature and landscape, and of course the human nature. Sometimes you can feel coincidences taking place in the creation of these short pieces, yet they are all structured shrewdly, opening up a variety of interpretations. Although shot on various locations around the world, the Minispectacles are not just any travel diary, but a universal experience of a journey where human emotions often verge on absurdity, or the image of reality may be somewhat distorted. The artist’s two short films Up and about again and In a musty, misty thicket are concise portraits of the human condition featuring bizarre characters and relations. Suomi-Väänänen expresses herself frankly, sharing what she sees through her camera without asserting her intentions.
At Cinemateket Maarit Suomi-Väänänen will present, together with two or three of her short films, all the Minispectacles she has made so far. Kalle Løchen will lead a discussion about her universe, the Finn´s quirky black sense of humour, and the open narrative situated at the crossing of cinema and video art.
