Lauri Astala, Risto-Pekka Blom & Jenni Hiltunen @ Backlight '14 - Photo Festival, Tampere & Nokia, Finland, 17.-28.9.2014

Backlight photo festival represents the historical Tehdassaari Factory Island for the first time as a stage for media art: Backlight ’14 Video Factory.

Inside of the robust walls of the former machine workshop of Nokia company, visual artists Katri Mononen and Jarno Vesala have curated a compilation of media art works by six different artists. Transit by Lauri Astala, Kudryavka – Little Ball of Fur by Risto-Pekka Blom and Blink by Jenni Hiltunen are included in the exhibition programme.

The exhibition generates an impression of spaceous floating, a theme which recurs in the soundtracks, visual appearances as well as portraits. Humans have become estranged to one another. They have lost the way to their burrow. The unique acoustics of Tehdas 108 Culture Factory spice up the soundtracks of the artworks. In the gloom of the old machine hall electric noise, repetitive jingle or a mere wind in the microphone find a unique echo.

Backlight ´14 represents 30 artists in main exhibitions: Backlight received 840 applications from 71 countries by international open call: 25 artists were selected all over the world. Additionally five artists were invited to Tampere Art Museum.

Moreover over 30 photographers are exhibited in Co-operation exhibitions.
