Video art by Pauliina Salminen and Minna Suoniemi screened at Instants vidéo
Video art by Pauliina Salminen and Minna Suoniemi is screened at Instants vidéo festival, held in Marseille from November 5–25. Established in 1988, the festival is dedicated to digital and poetic art.
On Wednesday, November 15 at 17:15, the screening “Le coprs dans la cité” features two video works by Pauliina Salminen.
In Rencontres à la place (2016), neighbours meet each other while crossing a square. The video is based on a performance by Scheherazade Zambrano Orozco with the inhabitants of Canet neighbourhood in Marseilles, as well as L’arrêt (2016), where time stands still while waiting at a bus stop.
Pauliina Salminen is a Finnish artist who graduated from Turku School of Arts and Communication in 1999 and from Université de Provencessa in Marseille, France in 2001. She has directed documentaries and made alternative films and media art. Her work consists of installations, interactive works and linear videos. Since 2004, Salminen has collaborated with Argentinean artist Andrés Jaschek. Together they have produced works that combine video, interactive and communal approaches. Their works have been presented in Finland and abroad, especially in France and also in Italy, Spain, Turkey, India and the United States.
“Le corps dans la cité” is followed at 17:45 by the screening of “Danser / Dessiner”, including Minna Suoniemi’s Horizontal Dance (2016).
In Horizontal Dance, leopard-covered legs into limbs of living flesh, trying to hang in there, to exist through human body. Animal in disguise, or human dressed to allow the animal to emerge. A hypnotic opening, beat boxing mouth, partying puma. “This body, this bodily existence, have it, own it, want it, move it. Move.”
Minna Suoniemi is a Helsinki-based artist working with moving image and video installation. She’s interested in how disruption and failure can make normative structures and models visible and has worked on loaded subjects such as gender roles, motherhood and power relations. She has exhibited internationally in Europe, United States, South America and Asia including Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma in Helsinki, Preus Museum of Photography in Norway, 2nd International Festival for Photography and Video in Seoul and Moscow Biennial for young art, and her work is in Collections of major Finnish Art Museums. Suoniemi is a member of The Finnish State audiovisual Art Committee and works as a lecturer in Aalto University, Department of Art.
