Giant by Salla Tykkä and The Apostle by Juhani Koivumäki at 2ANNAS 2015 in Riga, Sept 22–27
The short film Giant (2014) by Salla Tykkä (b. 1973) has been selected for the International short film competition of the 20th Riga International Film festival 2ANNAS, taking place in Riga, Latvia, between September 22 and 27, 2015.
Giant features leading junior team gymnasts of Romania. The film is shot in two boarding schools for artistic gymnastics in Onesti and Deva. A soundtrack of interviews with the gymnasts accompanies images of them training and of empty gymnasiums. Archive film footage starting from 1970s and clips from a feature fiction film shot in the same locations reveal not only a continuity in picturing this sport but also the structures of recording it. The film was awarded with the Tiger Awards for Short Film at the 43rd International Rotterdam Film Festival 2014.
In addition, the film The Apostle (2015) by Juhani Koivumäki (b. 1981) will be screened in the Focus Program. The theme of the Focus Program is MEN, explored in various different ways. The Apostle is included in the Focus Program Man and Religion.
The Apostle is a metaphorical short film about the radical ideas of Jesus of Nazareth, which are facing new forms of interpretations under the pressure of constantly changing needs of society and institutions.
