Jan Ijäs's Waste no. 2 Wreck at Rio de Janeiro International Short FF
Jan Ijäs’s Waste no2. Wreck (2016) has been selected for the special programme “Paisagens Remotas” (Remote Landscape) of the Rio de Janeiro International Short Film Festival– Curta Cinema 2016, that will be held from November 3–9 in Brazil. The programme films that showcase the relationship between people and the territory they inhabit, from countrified fields or urban complexes, to cubicle residences or even immaginary spaces. Films in which the site, more than a simple location, reveals itself as a subjective and fundamental part of the narrative. The screening takes place on Monday, November 7 at 18:00 in Cinemaison.
Waste no. 2 Wreck (Lampedusa, Italy, 2015) was filmed in 2014 and 2015 in the graveyard for refugee boats on the Italian island of Lampedusa. It is a story about how the value of garbage and rubbish can surprisingly change. The film has been previously screened e.g. at Tampere Film Festival and at Edinburgh Film Festival.
Media artist and filmmaker Jan Ijäs lives and works in Helsinki, Finland. Ijäs works with documentary, fiction and alternative film. The films of Ijäs deal with serious and difficult social themes, like migration into foreign and hostile societies. Ijäs’s films have been shown very widely abroad by over a hundred film festivals and as installations in museums and galleries.
