Axel Straschnoy's La Figure de la Terre @ Museo del Cine, Buenos Aires, Argentina, Nov 14 – Dec 20
The Museo del Cine of Buenos Aires and Kolme Perunaa present La Figure de la Terre de Pierre Louis Moreau de Maupertuis. A three-screen film by Axel Straschnoy (b. 1978) based on the book on the scientific expedition that determined the true shape of the Earth.
La Figure de la Terre is one of the latest pieces by Axel Straschnoy, a Helsinki-based Buenos Aires born visual artist. It is based on the book by the same name written by the French scientist Pierre Louis Moreau de Maupertuis on the scientific expedition he lead to the valley of the Tornio river in 1736. In what was one of the first-ever scientific expeditions, Maupertuis demonstrated Newton’s theories and determined the true shape of the Earth.
Twenty-four-minute long and projected on three screens, the film presents the Finnish historian of science Dr. Osmo Pekonen in the role of Maupertuis. A leading authority on the expedition, author of several books on it and a long-time Maupertuis alter-ego, Dr. Pekonen reenacts the expedition on camera.
