Maria Ångerman has a degree in fine art from Nykarleby Polytechnic, Finland. 2000-2004 she was based in Barcelona. Since then she's been actively engaged in the organisation of Platform, a gallery and artist residency in Vaasa. Currently she's based in Helsinki.
Ångerman's work encompasses a diverse range of media, including methodologies related to filmmaking, literature, drawing and relational art practices. Central to this body of work is a sensitivity to personal engagement and the fragility of intimate moments in often alienating public environments. There's a tactile sensibility that's evident throughout her work, across her use of high- and low-tech equipment, from moving image work to subtle wall-drawings and animations. The work, that is clearly emotive in content, is presented as a subtle series of narrative fragments, occupying a delicate territory between documentary fact and poetic fiction.
